Beaucarnea recurvata
Beaucarnea recurvata is more commonly known as Pony tail palm or Elephant's foot. This caudex species is extremely easy to care for, with very minimal maintenance. Recurvata is very slow growing, with the trunk staying relatively the same for many years, but the plant will put energy into new leaf growth.
Native to eastern Mexico, the Beaucarnea grows best when receiving some direct sun. This makes the perfect plant for a spot with intense light. You can grow your Beaucarnea in bright, indirect light but you may find that it will grow slower, and you will be watering it much less often.
Due to it's swollen trunk, which the plant uses to store it's water reserves, you must only water when the compost is completely dry to avoid rotting the roots. It's best to give your Beaucarnea a healthy soak to allow it to take up the water it needs, then allow it to drain. A good indication your Beaucarnea is overdue for watering, is when the trunk is beginning to feel slightly soft to the touch.
The plant has a shallower root system than most and likes to be kept in a tight pot. Do not over-pot your Beaucarnea as this can cause problems. When it comes to repotting your Beacarnea do not disturb the root system too much as they like them to be kept intact.
Given the right conditions you can keep your Beaucarnea for decades and pass it down the generations.
All plants are sold in their nursery pots. Decorative pots are sold seperately - you can head over to our Pot Collection. Recurvata in its 29cm nursery pot, fits our XXL and XXXL Bali pots.
Do not pot directly into our decorative pots. It's much better for your plant to keep it in its nursery pot to allow adequate drainage.
