Ficus elastica - three varieties
Begin your plant addiction with the trusted Ficus elastica. Elastica is the most common of the indoor Fig trees and comes in many different varieties. You will hear this plant go by many names Rubber Tree, or Rubber Plant depending where you live. Native to Southeastern Asia, this plant grows to a substatial height if given adequate care.
The Ficus elastica has large oval leaves. To keep them looking this shiny, regularly wipe the leaves. With only a single stem per pot, once the plant begins to mature, you may need to consider using a bamboo cane for support. If the plant tissue is broken in any way, the plant will weep a white sap. This is an irritant. Keep away from children and pets.
When Ficus plants are stressed, they can rather dramatically drop their leaves, but they ususally recover once given better conditions. Give your elastica bright, indirect light. They appreciate early morning or late afternoon sun, but should be sheltered from direct sun most of the day. Although from tropical regions they should suffice with average room humidity, but keep an eye out for crispy leaf edges. Water your elastica when the medium is feeling dry through the top half. They do not like soggy compost.
We have three different varietials:
Ficus elastica - deep green leaves, most common Ficus. Very versatile.
Ficus tineke - variegated leaves with a hint of pink. Needs brighter light.
Ficus abidjan - dark green leaves with burgandy undertones. Tolerates more shade.
All plants are sold in their nursery pots. Decorative pots are sold seperately. You can choose your pot style from our Pot Collection. We've paired them with our large DK Bucket pots, medium Almada and our medium Raw Stone pot.
Do not pot directly into our decorative pots. It's much better to keep your plant it in its nursery pot to allow adequate drainage.
