Ficus elastica 'Tineke'
This variegated Ficus elastica is a highly attractive houseplant & a real eye catcher. Elastica is the most common of the indoor Fig trees and comes in many different varieties. You will hear this plant go by many names Rubber Tree, or Rubber Plant depending where you live! Native to Southeastern Asia, this plant grows to a substatial height if given adequate care.
The broad, oval glossy leaves have varying colours of cream, greens & pinks. The varigation will change depending on the amount of light the plant is receiving. Which indicates that this species would prefer a lovely bright, diffused light all day to compensate for there being less chlorophyll in the leaves. They appreciate early morning or late afternoon sun, but should be sheltered from direct sun most of the day. Avoid placing your Tineke in a shadier position as this will cause the leaves to pump their leaves full of chlorophyll - which will result in the leaves reverting back to a greener colour - and in some cases can cause leaf drop.
Although they are tropical plants, average room humidity should suffice, but be mindful of any crispy edges on the leaves caused by air that is too dry. Wipe down the leaves to get any dust off, and they will thank you with beautiful, glossy new growth. Water your Tineke when the medium is feeling dry half way through as they do not like the roots to feel soggy.
What makes Rubber trees challenging to some can be the sudden leaf drop that can happen when the plant is stressed. Keep your Elastica away from any draughts, be mindful not to brush past it and try not to move your plant around unless absolutely necessary. They like to become established to a spot and left there. Over winter avoid any radiators and cold windows.
All plants are sold in their nursery pots. Decorative pots are sold seperately. You can choose your style pot from the drop down menu or head over to our Pot Collection. Do not pot directly into our decorative pots. It's much better for your plant to keep it in its nursery pot to allow adequate drainage.
